The Artist Cookbooks started in the winter of 2019 when I emailed artists from across so-called Canada and asked them to share a favourite recipe with me. My kitchen skills were subpar, but I intended to develop my competence through their guidance. I think I only made it through the COVID-19 lockdowns because of what I had learned and the breadth of recipes in that first Vol. As we entered the second year of the pandemic, the world felt less immediately terrifying, and people were starting to emerge, and I was in definite need of some new recipes and kitchen support. I reached out to some of my favourite artists again, and here is Vol. 2, with 51 recipes from 49 more artists.

The vegetarian recipes in this Vol. still respect an entry-level skill set, but you won’t be disappointed by the simple complexities they bring to the table. Along with needing a stockpile of eggs, flour, butter and mozzarella, which showed up as key ingredients, the approach of using what you have and the desire to enjoy small indulgences is also present.

In addition to the recipes, the artists also contributed by making a drawing on a dinner or side plate. The results are fantastic! These plates are being auctioned off with the proceeds to benefit FoodShare. The work that that organization undertakes in communities across Tkaronto/ Toronto is both critical and urgent. They are helping to change the narrative of how we speak about food, who has access to it, the importance of where it comes from, and the autonomy of diverse groups of people who grow it.

I hope that the recipes in this book offer you sustenance and small indulgences that felt so worth some that they have been shared with you.
